Among the influential aspects of the 20th century with reference to public health and policy, has been the law. From the 20th century, the law has been a fundamental element in the management of public health (Meetoo, 2010). While the conceptual legal framework of using the law to control elements of the public health has not been fully utilized, reducing deaths caused by smoking have been a great success. It is important to point out that smoking still does have a significant part to play on the number of persons that die from complication related.
Reflecting on the use of the same approach on chronic diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular diseases, it is certainly possible to succeed (Pillitteri, 2014). While some of the studies suggest that obesity is as a result of genetic inherent from the family tree, it is also true that majority of the persons that are obese have eating disorders. There have been sharp division on the issue and some of the experts have come out indicating that, parents with obese kids should be prosecuted for child abuse, among them Murtagh, Ludwig and Katie Hopkins. The same case applies to heart complications that are as a result lifestyle habits. Most of the chronic diseases leading in the mortality ratings are lifestyle associated rather than genetic. As such, much like smoking and alcohol consumption, these diseases can also be controlled using policies (Hinkle & Cheever, 2013).
