For numerous students today, the explosion of social media has altered the methods of communication. Individuals have become bilingual proficient through different avenues whereby, they utilize informal texting to complement academic writing and taking notes in class. The informal text refers to a mode of writing that uses various aspects of writing such as colloquial words and expressions, which include slang and figures of speech, simple and short sentences, abbreviations and contractions (Schwartz, 2013). The New Jersey Record article, depict that texting through mobile devises, emails and lecture notes have become the most commonly utilized writing genres (Barseghian, 2012). However, with informal text seemingly taking over, writing among students has improved through the development of vocabulary and revolution of the English language. Contrary, their one hundred and sixty characters make writing research papers seem like a difficult task and the advent of short forms where words like “gdnte” and “u” replace “goodnight” and “you” thereby causing grammatical mistakes. These among other factors convey both negative and positive effects on writing.
The informal text presents numerous positive benefits. First, it promotes language evolution. The facilitation of students to utilize different devices in their classwork has led to the expansion of the English language whereby, students get the opportunity to express themselves and text in their most basic language such as slang that accentuates their understanding of the concept and utilizing the English language. According to Tina Barseghian, some educators and experts in linguists observe that “kids who text are exercising a different and additional muscle when texting, writing and note-taking and that skill is adding to a student’s growing and changing repertoire (Barseghian, 2012).” Further, Sotillo, a linguistics expert and an associate professor emphasized that when children are in school, they are aware that they should not utilize texting language. She thus concluded that no one was trying to abolish the English language, but it keeps on changing. Hence, it was not advisable to continue propelling negativity towards the change in language (Barseghian, 2012). Moreover, their ability to balance between text-talking and using proper grammar further develops their language. Secondly, use of informal text accentuates the love for writing.
