The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears is novel that both captivating and soul searching for the readers. It brings out some of the most intriguing aspects of the life of an immigrant trying to cope with the present while still working to control the past. Sepha Stephanos is an immigrant from Ethiopia, having come to America to find refuge and better life. Most importantly is the fact that he has come to start his life a fresh in the hope of making through the American dream (Mengestu, 2007). Sepha, flees from Ethiopia at a time when there is a bloody revolution, in which he sees soldiers beating up his father to the point of death. He then sells his family’s jewelry to pay for his safe passage to come to America in the hope of a new start. Starting his life in a poor neighborhood where his only friends include two Africans who share in his pain for their lives and that of their land, he is struggling to find balance. Even in the new found home, there are unrests, that leave him wondering if he will again lose it all again in the wake of the racial incidences. Of the themes that come out of the novel, there is one that is deep seated, love. This is a theme that takes many forms and tries to bring together a novel that speaks to reader with such inspirational emotions (Mengestu, 2007). It explains why reading through the novel, one is able to connect with the characters, the plight of the immigrants and more so their daily connections that their share in their struggles and triumphs.
One of the love types that comes out is that of their nation and people. This is a love that can easily be described as nationalistic. This is relative to the fact, together with his friends, they all discuss the issues that affect their mother nations and how badly the situation is back home (Mengestu, 2007).
