A narrative refers to a work of literature that provides a sequence of connected events. These events usually introduce some disruption into a story world including animals, humans or human-like agents, whether fictional, realistic, dreamed or remembered (Herman, 2009). Narrative refers to a story often told by a narrator who may share an experience that he or she took part in or an experience that he or she observed. Many types of literature fall under narratives and often human beings use them in their daily lives. Narratives form a vital part of human nature, and we cannot do without them; therefore, this paper will discuss various types of stories and their importance in literature and to humans.
Narration or storytelling began with oral traditions in different forms such as folktales, legends, myths, ballads, and anecdotes. Our ancestors told these stories and retold them as they passed them down from generation to generation as a demonstration of wisdom and knowledge of the early people. Even in the contemporary world, narratives can be found in the theater, music, and cinema. Various types of narratives exist, for example, legends, myths, folktales, and anecdotes. Myths, legends, and folktales depict prose narratives under the category of verbal arts. They relate close to each other because all the three demonstrate tales in prose (Denning, 2016).
Folktales usually refer to as fiction because they may not have happened. They may be set in any place and time and often told only for entertainment and moral lessons. Some people refer to folktales as nursery tales, but many societies do not restrict them to children only.
