Initial Artifact analysis

The Initial Artifact Analysis assignment asks you to compose a 2–3 page analysis of a cultural artifact, which is to say, any constructed text that carries a message, such as a film scene, speech, photograph, advertisement, poem, short story, song, etc.

Performing a close analysis means asking what is being communicated by your artifact and how it is being communicated. This process entails both fundamental and rhetorical moves of analysis in pursuit of the question, to whom does your artifact speak, and how, and why? Please make sure to provide me with access to your chosen artifact (attach the image, link to a website, etc.).

WHAT IS THIS ASSIGNMENT?

Pick an artifact that you find interesting, exciting, challenging—something that stimulates your curiosity. Picking something complex will be more enjoyable and engaging in the long run.

Support the claims you make with evidence and connect them through clear reasoning. (It’s never enough to say that a word or image or color in your artifact “does something”; it’s your job to show how and why those elements can be seen as evidence for a particular claim.

Don’t be satisfied with the obvious or easy analysis. Work to unpack and understand an artifact’s complexity, performing analysis again and again, before and while writing.

This assignment emphasizes analysis—the act of breaking something down to its key elements and determining how those elements work together to create meaning.  This means that the assignment is not just about description and summary. Although description and summary provide important context, this assignment asks you to move beyond summary and engage with specifics, and to pursue possible interpretations, not mere description.

This assignment is not about whether you agree or disagree with what you find the artifact communicates, nor is about whether you like or dislike it, or think it should or shouldn’t do something. In order to fully observe the finer details and patterns, suspend your initial judgments of “right” or “wrong,” “good” or “bad,” and keep your concentration on the evidence at hand.  

As this is an Initial Artifact Analysis, the objective is not to settle on any central argument.  Committing to one angle of interpretation so early in the analysis could limit your ability to observe other details of the text, and consider alternate viewpoints.
