Why Cheating in a Relationship is Wrong Essay

Essay Instructions:

Purpose: To argue against a source and present an effective rebuttal.


Objectives:  In this essay, you will effectively present the argument of your chosen source, analyze and present some of the basic principles of the author’s position, and present your own point of view and reasons for disagreeing with your source (essentially, the organization of the essay is: summary, analysis, rebuttal). We will be going over the set-up of this paper in detail in class. The final essay should be a clear, comprehensive, and effective means of presenting both sides of the argument.


The Assignment:


For this essay, you will be utilizing ONE of the essays:



  • “What Our Education System Needs is More F’s” by Carl Singleton

  • What if Marriage is Bad For Us?” by Laurie Essig and Lynn Owens

  • “What’s So Great About America” by Dinesh D’Souza


This essay assignment is strictly structured as follows:



  • Part 1: You will first summarize the article.  Remember to include article title and author’s full name (after you give the author’s full name once, you can then refer to him/her only by their last name)! You may paraphrase some of the author’s argument and quote small parts of the article if appropriate. This should be 2-3 paragraphs in length.  

  • Part II: Once you’ve summarized the source’s argument, you must then analyze/evaluate the author and his/her argument. You should acknowledge and consider any evidence used to present his/her argument and determine whether or not it is worthy of a good argument. You should consider the following: author’s background, values, bias/point of view, tone/word choice, logic and reasoning, evidence, etc. This section should be 2-3 paragraphs long.

  • Part III: The final part of the essay is called the rebuttal. This is when you argue your own point of view on the topic itself, particularly in opposition to the thesis of your article. This should be 3 paragraphs long.

  • You should have a short conclusion paragraph at the end of the paper that wraps everything up


We will go over all of these skills in class, and I will give you copious notes for how to put together each section of the paper. Your grade on this assignment is largely based on following the predetermined structure and achieving the purpose of each of the separate sections. This paper will be graded by a specific rubric that is attached to the final draft assignment link in Blackboard. You may refer to this rubric at any time.


Please Note: You are not required to do any additional research to support your own counterarguments against the original source.  Sometimes, students feel that in order to rebut the original article well, they need to look up a few facts or insert numbers/statistics; if you do this, you are responsible for citing your sources.


Essay Format: The essay should adhere to writing format you are using in this course (MLA, APA, Chicago), be logically written and supported, and connections between ideas and research conducted should be evident and clear to the reader.  Grammar and spelling, as in all essays, do count!

People have unique beliefs and practices that determine their actions and life decisions. In some instances, people might have strong beliefs that makes it impossible to suggest that the beliefs are wrong. The notion that marriage is good for us is one of the ideal examples of such theories. According to Essig and Owens (2009), the authors of the article “What If Marriage is Bad for Us” posit that the ultimate purpose of marriage is outdated and, thus, having negative implications to the couples and the society at large. Therefore, the people who choose to rebel marriage as a lifestyle of the middle class and the whites could be right.
Essig and Owens (2009) ague that marriage might be an obsolete idea that might not make people wealthy and happy as they believe they are supposed to be. The authors postulate that some of the couples are rich but their wealth does not come from marriage. In some instances, women would get married for their survival before realizing the need for love. As a result, most men would be unfaithful, thus, making the marriage unbearable. The gender disparity is one of the major factors that resulted in increased instances of divorce. Therefore, marriage should be for people with high economic, education, and racial status since they would not stick to abusive relationships for survival. Traditional reasons for marriage fail to reflect with the current ones, thus leading to increased divorce rates. In the past generations, most women would marry for financial stability rather than marrying for love and investing together.
Part II Analysis
The article, “What If Marriage is Bad for Us” is informative on the reasons that marriage is not for everyone. However, the author would have conducted more research on the various benefits of marriage. It is clear that the authors portray marriage as having more negative repercussions that far outweigh the positive aspects of it. According to the authors, women married for survival in the traditional setting rather than for love. Therefore, men would cheat in marriage comfortably while women had to persevere all the different forms of abuse.
Essig and Owens (2009) argue that married couples are more isolated than single people. In their article, both authors advocate against marriage. Furthermore, they purport that most married individuals follow the media portrayals on the happy married couple rather than focusing more...
