Essays From The Early 1900s Zhang Shenfu's essay centers on women's emancipation. First, the author asks an important question, challenging "whether men and women should enjoy the same status in society, and we should ask what has caused our contemporary social reality" (Shenfu, p. 168). This is essential in advancing the argument throughout the essay. As the author capture, men have been regarded as the more vigorous sex in society for many years, allowing them to take advantage of women. To their advantage, men created rules that confined women to disadvantaged spheres of society. The exposure through the essay challenges the long-lived ideology that oppresses women in society. Therefore, it affirms the importance of emancipating women, although it is done hypocritically by men who have failed to apologize for their wrongs(Shenfu, 1999).
