Andrew Jackson was the seventh president to rule over the United States of America, between the years 1829 and 1837 (Biography.com, 2017). He had been serving as a general before he became the president, during which time he was able to gain massive support from which he used to rise to power (The White House, 2017). He would also serve in both houses of the congress before becoming the president of the United States. During his reign, he had some controversial elements that tainted his presidency (Feller, 2017).
One of the main controversies that are associated with the presidency is the tension that ensued between Calhoun and Jackson. This is following the anonymous printing of the South Carolina exposition and protest in the year 1828. Calhoun was the then vice president and he was suggesting that his state of South Carolina should annul the protective cotton tariff that had been imposed by the federal government (kveneziano, 2015). In the heat of the tension Jackson even threatened to have the troops sent down to the state and have them force the people comply with the directive of the federal government. This is a tension that would see most of the events that two attended would be fired along the lines of their differences that they held between them (Inskeep, 2016). It is was a major issue and one that saw the two constantly fight over their challenges and loyalty towards one another. However, Jackson in this case always maintained the upper hand given that he used his power and military muscle to contain the situation. At the same time the vice president was skewed towards formulating ways to discipline the president for his choices (The Hermitage, 2017).
As if the issues with the presidency were not over, then came the Indian removal act that was passed by congress (VOA, 2017).
‘Congress passes the Indian Removal Act, sanctioning the forcible relocation of Creek, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Choctaw, and Seminole tribes to land allotments west of the Mississippi river. Ninety-four removal treaties follow the bill's enactment. From 1835 to 1838, Cherokee and Creek are forcibly removed from the Southeast onto reservations. Nearly one quarter die along what became known as the “Trail of Tears.”’ (University of Virginia, 2017)
This was met with a lot of hostility and more importantly led to the division among the people. Ideally this was a discriminating act and one that would see most of the families on the southeast within the Cherokee and Creek displaced (HISTORY.com, 2017). This further put the president in a defensive position. Where the Indians now did not support the presidency leave alone most of the minority groups of the states. This was an ill formed move and one that would further put the president in a position where not many of the electorate supported the regime (VOA, 2017).
It important to note that the presidency was rocked with much of the discrimination elements as the congress passed and the president passed into law the removal act (Stevenson, 2013).
