Donne uses a mocking and belittling tone in the poem "Death, be not proud." He personalizes death and addresses it demystifying the power and fear that people have attached to it. Donne tells death that it is not as mighty and dreadful as others believe death to be (Donne, 2000, lines 1&2). The degrading tone is meant to cut the arrogance that death is powerful and people should fear it. Donne pokes fun at the overrated power of death.
