American Dream
Arthur Miller’s play exposes the devastating consequences of the American Dream. In his pursuit of wealth, a salesman’s untamed ambitions prove futile in the end as he realizes he cannot accomplish so much in life (Nahvi, 2016). Frustrated by his failures, he commits suicide. Perhaps Miller captures the wrong impression that most people have regarding the American dream. The American dream is a principle that all Americans have equal opportunities and resources to achieve the highest goals and aspirations. James Adams first coined the phrase in 1931 (Putnam, 2016). Anyone, regardless of their class or place of birth, can define success in their unique way. Therefore, the American dream is realized through risk-taking, sacrifice, hard work, and not on a silver platter.
