Arthur Miller’s play exposes the devastating consequences of the American Dream. In his pursuit of wealth, a salesman’s untamed ambitions prove futile in the end as he realizes he cannot accomplish so much in life (Nahvi, 2016). Frustrated by his failures, he commits suicide. Perhaps Miller captures the wrong impression that most people have regarding the American dream. The American dream is a principle that all Americans have equal opportunities and resources to achieve the highest goals and aspirations. James Adams first coined the phrase in 1931 (Putnam, 2016). Anyone, regardless of their class or place of birth, can define success in their unique way. Therefore, the American dream is realized through risk-taking, sacrifice, hard work, and not on a silver platter.
The American dream impacts me in many ways. To begin with, I realize that I have to work hard in school, attain good grades, get a decent job, and contribute to building the nation. Since nothing comes without sacrifice, I have to devise a study plan and reduce leisure activities such as playing with friends. I come from an immigrant family, and since the American dream is equally available to all residents of the United States, I feel I can compete favorably alongside other citizens. I have to be smarter and enjoy the opportunities the government accords all citizens. I know I can work anywhere within the country as long as I have the right qualifications.
My parents support me in my quest to achieve the American dream. They pay my expenses, at least while I am still a student. They want me to work hard and excel in school. I reckon that it will be their greatest pleasure if I turn into a young, responsible man. Currently, I am a senior male stud...
