Ophelia in the play is a symbol of innocence and even decorum, however eventually she goes mad. This then escalates her suicide after she drowns. It is the rapid change that leaves most of the audience baffled (FolgerLibrary, 2010). However, there is a method to all the madness and this is inform of a several reasons. One of the main reason is the fact that, she was heartbroken over her lover hamlet. While this is still debatable, there is some element of obvious hurt that is associated with the feeling that she had for Hamlet. There is also the element of her father dying. Whether considered in isolation it is clear that, the death of her father would have affected her significantly to a point of sudden change. The confusion that faces Ophelia, given that she loves Hamlet and she has a duty to her father was significant enough to cause certain changes in her behavior. What is more important is the fact that she was in love with hamlet, who then kills the father (FolgerLibrary, 2010). This is a rather traumatizing experience for anyone and it could have caused her to go mad with all the information that she had to processes and the emotions associated with the events. She considers the challenge of losing the two main men in her life a tragedy. Other than that fact that she is mourning over the two men in her life, there is also the consideration that, all her life she had been manipulated by the men that came to or were in her life.
