The term abstract expressionism refers to a movement that supported the non-representative paintings that started back in the 1940s and the 50s flourishing in the United States. Although it was spearheaded by a majority of the American artists then, most of the influenced came from the European expatriates. Most of them had grown up during the depression era and also had been greatly influenced by the second world wars as well as the cold aftermath.
