Introduction
It is very much arguable on whether A & P store was really advocating for women’s’ rights. From an outer look, it may appear like it is not advocating for women rights. But on a closer look, some glimpse of advocating for women rights seem to appear. It might all depend on what one views to be right of women and what deems not. Fernandez (2014) notes that: the boundaries of women’s’ rights are not entirely exclusive.
The events on the entrance of the girls present a picture in which A& P do not seem to advocate for women rights. The reaction of the workers towards the girls seems to be against any orientation towards the rights of women. When the girls enter the store, the male workers seem to be ogling for them.
Advocating for women rights
The reaction of some of the workers towards the girls can be said to orient to advocacy of women’s’ rights. Particularly, Sammy, who seems to be overwhelmed by their beauty and is lost for this one girl whom he dubs ‘Queenie’.
On some note, the appreciation of the beauty of the girls could be aligned to advocacy of women rights. Women are made beautiful, to be respected, not to be misused by men as vessels of satisfying their desires. The attraction of Sammy to the beauty of the girls leads to him noting even the minute details of the girls. This shows that he is appreciating the beauty of the girls.
The focal point in the advocacy of women’s rights that is portrayed by the workers in the A & P, is noted when, Sammy, feels pity for the girls, for compromising themselves by their way of dressing. This is because, the A & P store is said to be in the middle of the town, away from the beaches. This therefore, calls for them to dress in a manner that does not call for attention from every man. The fact that Sammy feels pity for these girls due to the fact that they are compromising their lives by their way of dressing is aligned to advocacy of women rights which could have been instilled in him by the practices in the A&P store which are aligned to advocacy of women rights.<...
