Analysis of Character Development in A Million Little Pieces by James Frey
The selected character is James Frey, who is also the protagonist. James Frey was a privileged child whose family was wealthy and fairly stable, but he grew up feeling as though he was an outcast. He is presently 23 years old and his addictions have become uncontrollable. Direct characterization is when the narrator tells the readers something regarding a character. In this story, instances of direct characterization are (i) when James asserts that he started to drink alcohol and smoke pot when he was just 10 years old. (ii) When the readers first encounter James, he is on an airplane and James specifically states that he does not have any idea of where he is going.
With indirect characterization, the narrator shows the readers something regarding the character through the actions of the character, things other characters say about the character, or things said by the character.
