Risk Nora Takes in the play A Doll's House
A Doll's House is a play by a Norwegian play writer Henrik Ibsen that focuses on a typical 19th-century family. Nora is the wife of Torvald, a bank manager. Their family looks perfect despite not having enough money before Torvald was promoted to manage the bank. Through a flashback, we see how they have persevered tough times where Norah had to decorate the house herself during Christmas an in page 4, Torvald tells his wife it will take some time before he gets his first salary, meaning they should use the available money sparingly (Ibsen & ARCHER, 1932). Despite the happiness that Norah shows, she has taken a risk that could cost her everything she has, including the family that gives her happiness. The risk was, however, worth it.
A person who cares for his family will do anything in his power to take care of the family and ensure it is happy. Nora did precisely that. In ACT I page 13 of the play, we are introduced to a conversation between Nora and Kristine, her childhood friend, about how life has been for Nora. Torvald has worked so hard to get money for the family that he fell dangerously ill (Ibsen & ARCHER, 1932). Initially, Torvald was working in the government service but had a very minimal chance of promotion, and he had to overwork to make extra money. This made him sick, and doctors advised that he went to the South to get proper treatment. At that time, Torvald and Nora were newly married and had no savings. Nora told Kristine that the treatment needed much money (Ibsen & ARCHER, 1932), yet she could not afford to lose her husband.
Nora borrowed a loan to take her husband, Torvald Helmer, to Italy for treatment. In her process of taking the loan, Nora did not tell her husband about the plan. Secondly, she forged her father's signature to appear that her dad gifted her money to treat her father. We also learn that Nora's father was critically ill at that time, and she was pregnant. Forgery is a very bad offense, and Norah was aware of it, but she did it anyway. If she were caught, she would have ended in jail, which would cost her the family love she was fighting to maintain. Consequently, Torvald would be accused of colluding with his wife to commit fraud because it was used for his treatment in Italy. Another danger that came with the forgery is that Nora might even have lost Torvald—imagining how he would react if he learned of the forgery in a different way other than the one highlighted in the play. Torvald would possibly clear the loan's balance and divorce Nora for cheating and work behind his back.
