Why Antarctic Sea Ice Cover Has Increased Under the Effects of Climate Change
The article “Why Antarctic Sea Ice Cover Has Increased under the Effects of Climate Change” conveys a significant finding that challenges the previous findings and notions that climate change has contributed to shrinking of the Antarctic. The general perception is that global climatic changes, where there are increased temperatures, have contributed to melting of ice in the Polar Regions. The data presented shows that while the arctic shows a loss the Antarctica area of sea covered by ice increases despite global climatic change. The author presents data for the past 19 years using NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) maps of ice motions collected everyday from satellites owned by the US defense meteorological satellites. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) were the financiers of the research.
According to the article, the ice drifts due to the northern winds blowing in the Antarctica, causing export of the ice. The ice drift is seen to have changed from 1992 leading to a decrease in some areas and an increase in others as given by the wind patterns.
