Arson investigation seeks to examine the origins and causes of a fire. According to the International Association of Fire Chiefs (2004), arson investigation must also seek to find out the person responsible for starting the fire as well as the sequence of events leading up to it. Furthermore, as informed by Faleti (2018), while finding evidence that can lead to a crime’s origin is difficult, when the crime is an arson, extra attention and care is needed in order to solve the case. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) [n.d.] documents the steps involved in arson investigation:
Arrival at the Scene
When first responders arrive at the arson scene, they must assess and secure it and see to it that medical attention has been accorded to the victims (NIJ, n.d.). The first responders also have to observe the conditions of the scene and consequently provide a complete and accurate description to the investigators. The aspects that need to be observed and noted by first responders include condition and location of victims and witnesses, unusual activities in the scene, smoke and flame conditions, the first public safety workers to arrive, the techniques used, weather conditions, among others. It is important that every detail is captured since they can help in the investigation. The first responders also have to ensure the bystanders, victims, as well as the safety personnel, are safe. They also have to preserve and protect evidence.
Evaluating the Scene
Once the situation has been contained, the first responders are relieved by the investigator. The investigator meets with the first responder in order to access the events that happened at the scene, make introductions, and determine scene integrity and safety issues.
