Reaction to The Movie Crash
The film Crash by Paul Haggis dwells on a number of experiences which have been integrated to portray various major themes. In various circumstances throughout the film, characters make decisions that can be considered to deviate from the practices that are socially acceptable. For instance, police officers are supposed to enforce the law and protect an individual’s rights regardless of their race, gender or cultural differences, however, Matt Dillion, acts in a racist manner and harasses black citizens. An example of such an act is when Dillion stops a random couple and performs an invasive search on the white woman while the husband watches as an act of humiliation (Haggis, 2004). Such an act can be described as informal deviance since the officer was misusing authority. On the other hand, when Officer Ryan was harassing Christine, the husband, Cameron, could not take action to defend Christine since attacking an officer of the law was a punishable offense (Haggis, 2004). The failure to act even though the search was invasive illustrates the presence of informal social sanctions, which guide individual behavior. The lack of such rules might have prompted Cameron or Officer Hansen to defend Christine.
Racism is also prevalent in the movie. A majority of characters in the movies are affected by racial disputes. The characters are either victims or a perpetrator of the acts. For instance, in the scene when the director and the white-assistant required a voice over for a particular scene, the white assistant suggested that the performer should repeat the scene voice over since it did not sound black enough.
