A PLASTIC OCEAN VS. CHASING CORAL COMPARE AND CONTRAST PAPER
The human activities have devastating impacts on climate. Activities from industrial to agricultural all have affected the environment in one way or the other. The present world is primarily plastic. Most of the items in the world are made of plastics from a toothbrush to the clothes we wear. However, plastics are not safe for the environment, neither is it appealing. Human production of plastics is recorded at hundreds of millions of tonnes of plastics annually since the years 1950s. It is so worrying that the production rates are instead rising amidst the increasingly devastating effects on the environment. The most concerning fact about the production and use of plastics is that most of the plastics are used only once and discarded. A tiny portion of the plastics is reused when the remaining majority are disposed of either in landfills or other water bodies – including the oceans. A plastic ocean, directed by Jeff Orlowski starts off the documentary by his perspective of life full of abundance. Immediately into the movie, we experience death. Chasing coral is on the other hand directed by Craig Leeson – an Australian journalist. Leeson explores the devastating effects of plastics on the beautiful environment. In particular, he investigates the implications of plastics on the marine life. Both the documentaries look at the environment although from distinct angles. As such the documentaries have varying differences and similarities. This paper explores these similarities and differences about the environment (Gall, S. C., & Thompson, R. C., 2015).
The first similarities are that both the documentaries are primarily concerned with marine life. Just like Craig, Jeff explores the detrimental effect that humans actions pose to the marine environment. Both the directors of the film passionately examines their sea life. In both the documentaries, the decades' based research on the aquatic life is exposed. Jeff Orlowski through Chasing corals takes us through the changes that happen to the coral reefs – from the time the reefs are full of life to a time when they are lifeless. The dead corals are covered in algae (Grobar, M., 2017). Similarly, A plastic ocean covers the scenes of characters on a mission to look for the blue whale. During their adventure, they realize plastics wastes in an ocean they expect to be pristine.
