The concept of junk science has created heated debates especially in legal and political contexts. Junk science refers to any fraudulent scientific analysis, research, or data. It involves unproven or untested theories. However, there is an ambiguity on the definitions of limits of junk science (Kokkoris, 2010). This ambiguity regards the criteria necessary for setting the limits between ‘good science’ and ‘junk science’. The major limitation of junk science is that the concept ignores the wider social context where the scientific research is generated (Kokkoris, 2010). The latest theories regarding empirical observations and the science’s philosophy recognize the importance of socialization as well as the social context as the scientific communities’ tool of consensus information. Additionally, junk science ignores the scientific discourse’s plurality as well as the likelihood of the current fringe opinions becoming "part of the conventional among a certain groups of scientists (Kokkoris, 2010). This research paper sought to examine the definition of junk science based on examples.
According to the report by JunkScience.com (2015), an example of junk science is the declaration by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that carbon dioxide causes Asthma. This is an example of junk science in that it is not based on empirical evidence but rather on unproven theories. Evidently, carbon dioxide inhalation cannot cause asthma because the body produces carbon dioxide which is exhaled from the lungs.
