Philosophy is largely focused on asking various questions and trying to find the necessary answers for the questions. However, Perry and Bratman (2015, p. 9) argues that since not all the people might agree with a given answer, it is important for one to provide the underlying reasons as to why he or she thinks than a particular answer is better than others. While trying to give such reasons, one is employing logic either knowingly or unknowingly. It thus follows that it is often difficult for people to accept one’s reasoning if he or she fails to use logic. This paper examines some logical tools including questioning, reasoning, open mind, logic, clear thinking and arguing; inductive reasoning versus deductive reasoning, valid arguments versus bad arguments, and the soundness and common fallacies found in philosophical arguments.
Arguing is one of the philosophical apparatus that are commonly used. Arguing is a way through which individuals articulate their reasoning rather than a mere verbal dispute regarding the subject matter (Perry & Bratman, 2015, p. 9). During an argument, there has to be a logical flow of statements. It starts with the first statements, also referred to us the premises, to the last statements, referred to as the conclusion.On the other hand, Logic refers to the way people articulate their reasoning while trying to convince others as to why they believe on something. As mentioned earlier, some people might not agree with others’ reasoning or arguments. As such, they will ask questions in an attempt to ascertain the validity of one’s arguments or reasoning.
