It is suggested that ancestors of the two species interbred at some point in the distant past to form fertile hybrids. It is well established that chimpanzees are the closest living relative of humans but this is the first time that scientists have found evidence for hybridization through interbreeding. It was concluded that this research comes from an in depth analysis of the genomes of humans, chimps, gorillas and monkeys. The researchers were especially interested in the point at which the process of the separation of species that gave rise to the chimp and human lineages. This study however gave unexpected results about how we are separated from our closest relatives, the chimps. Next, a comparison of the entire DNA of chimps and humans suggests that they split apart no more than 6.3 million years ago. The study found that an original split was probably followed by a phase of interbreeding and hybridization, possibly with fertile female hybrids cross-breeding with male chimps, before the final split occurred. Researchers lastly looked at the variation in evolutionary history across the genomes of humans and chimps. They found that the time of full divergence between the two species ranges over four million years. Specifically, the study found that the X chromosome is the youngest part of the genome and was still being modified just before the final split occurred. Further research and more advanced technology have shown that that may not be exactly true, but it has been shown that humans and chimpanzees might have interbred at some point in our early history. It was found in 2006, that genetic research suggested that after the last known ancestor of humans and chimpanzees, which lived between 5 and 7 million years ago, there was interbreeding between the human and chimpanzees linages for 1.2 million years. This is thought because of the similarities in linages and living geographies (“Could Chimps and Humans Interbreed?”). It has been found that humans and chimpanzees are closely related, sharing 95% of their DNA sequence and 99% of their coding DNA sequences (Hecht). Another study showed another similarity of humans and chimpanzees, the X-chromosome. Comparisons of the human and chimpanzee genomes suggests interbreeding. Findings show that the X-chromosome may have diverged about 1.2 million years more recently than the other chromosomes. This led to the discovery that there were two splits between humans and chimpanzees (Wade). It is felt that while there is some research that does show discontinuation with some of the evidence found to support the interbreeding of humans and chimpanzees, that it is still very possible for the interbreeding of the two. According to the recent study by (Man. 2006) the hominids that came much earlier than the human race may have been interbreeding with the cousin chimps, after a split that resulted in the separation of the humans and the chimpanzees. The interbreeding of the two species may then have led to the hybrids which then led to the hybrids crossbreeding even further with the fertile females.
