Ascaris Lumbricoides is a roundworm (nematode) that inhabits the intestines of humans. It is 13-15 cm in length and it can live in the intestines for a period of 6-24 months. Infection is usually through food contaminated by soil with faeces from the worm. It is common in deprived areas where there is poor sanitation. At the initial stage of infection, there may be no symptoms, but at the migratory phase, the larvae penetrate into the tissues, and circulate throughout the body via lymphatic systems and blood. Commonly, there final destination is the lungs where the larvae penetrates the pulmonary capillaries. It enters the alveoli from where it ascends to the throat.
