Arson investigation has been labeled “junk science” by some legal and scientific scholars because many poorly trained arson investigators have depended on assumptions that are dubious in explaining how fires start and behave. Over the years, many people have been convicted of arson but in the recent past, it has been determined that these convictions were based on wrong conclusions. Many are still incarcerated on accounts of arson when new scientific methods show that the past techniques of providing arson were wrong and misleading (Arson, 2012).
In the past, fire investigators often started their career in the fire department and inherited jobs from predecessors. In most cases, training was mainly “on the job” given by mentoring superiors.
