Emergency Management in America
The American emergency management system is designed to deal with natural disasters that may result from unexpected metrological and geological events that may cause harm to any region falling within the boundaries of the United States of America. This system designates natural disaster-prone areas based on data from previous natural disasters collected from various sources (Anonymous, 2022). This management system is designed to deal with natural disasters, including tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, and several other man-made disasters such as terrorism, forest fire, the release of toxic material, and many others. This security management system is based on the fact that despite differences in disasters, they all share common elements; hence a conclusive strategy can be made to deal with any such emergency. This emergency response system is based on the cycle of the following four phases: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery (Anonymous, 2022).
During the mitigation phase, the authorities deal with emergencies, design and adopt various remedial measures to minimize the intensity of a disaster, the danger of the occurrence of a disaster, and the effects of a disaster. For instance, they are involved in preventive measures such as reinforcing the foundation of homes and other places to make them bear the impact of fast wind and making water channels to redirect the flow of floodwater from human settlements to wild areas (Anonymous, 2022). In the preparedness phase, the authorities provide people with strategies to deal with natural disasters and give them appropriate training to enhance their on-ground abilities to tackle an emergency. This phase also involves on-field inspection of places and properties more susceptible to damage by an unexpected event.
The response phase is based on implementing effective, swift, and suitable remedial measures right after a natural disaster. For instance, search and rescue teams are sent to the affected areas to respond to a disaster. Recovery is the last phase of this emergency management system, and it involves practical efforts to bring back life to normalcy in disaster-hit areas. Reconstruction of damaged structures, making efforts to minimize the spread of illness, and adopting measures to minimize the vulnerability of these areas are some of the aspects of this phase (Anonymous, 2022).
Emergency Management in Canada
The emergency management system has been redesigned and upgraded based on the Emergency Management Act in Canada. According to this act, all stakeholders are given equal importance in devising and implementing effective emergency management strategies. Based on this act, the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness heads the Emergency Management system (Publicsafety, 2022).
