Race has for a long time been a contentious issue in the U.S. It has divided the citizens right in the middle. In the education system for example, race has been used since the days of slavery to advance segregation. However, things have changed over the past few decades. There is more recognition of racial integration, which has in turn brought about changes in school and college admissions throughout the country. Everyone is now allowed to join any school of choice. When it comes to the University of Texas, the admission process takes up a holistic approach.
A holistic approach in admission to educational institutions is whereby other attributes of the student are taken into consideration, apart from only their academic qualifications or test scores (Dent & Arkes, 2019). The span of considerations ranges from specific accomplishments to extracurricular achievements. When it comes to the admission process therefore each aspect constitutes a distinct feature worth testing. Race is one of the considerations in the holistic approach to admission, taken by the University of Texas. How has this been worked out? Well, despite the state’s Top Ten Percent Rule, the university has stuck to its consideration of race when it comes to admissions (Parker, 2018).
The university considers race a holistic approach in admission because race is part of its policy of offering a diverse learning environment that fully benefits all the students therein (Parker, 2018). In other terms, the institution greatly values and embraces diversity. The embracement of diversity is meant to level out the socioeconomic, geographic as well as racial differences therein. There is therefore, a level ground that ensures relatively equal numbers of students from various races are admitted into the institution, without strict regulations towards the same.
