Forensic psychiatrists are called upon to assess the risk of whether mentally ill individuals will be dangerous in the future. The task is not easy as it might sound since it is challenging to determine people’s personalities and behavioral change in upcoming years. Some of the difficulties that forensic psychiatrists might encounter when predicting whether someone will be dangerous in the future include the choice of the right risk assessment tools, miscommunication between risk assessors and doctors, and the predictive inaccuracy. Currently, over 200 structured tools are available, which forensic psychiatrists may use to predict how a person will behave in the future (Douglas, Pugh, Singh, Savulescu, & Fazel, 2017). However, the primary issue is knowing the tool that will give the most accurate results. The predictive inaccuracy is a problem that can emanate from the tool being used. Moreover, if forensic psychiatrists and doctors are not in good terms, the miscommunication between the two might be a challenge in predicting whether an individual will be dangerous in the future or not.
