Employers would want to ensure that that interferes with the worker’s motivation in the workplace including their social media activities. One of the limits that need to be placed on the employed is intrusive personal searches that infringe on the worker’s right of privacy. Rigorous body searches as well as searchers of personal property should be handled cautiously if necessary. Legal lawsuits may arise out of the employer’s actions given that the employees may suffer distress or even bodily harm. Searching personal property including mobile phones has legal ramifications of invasion of privacy, while the search on online activity should be done sparingly. As such, the employer need not be interested to know the content of e-mail communication, but only online search activities.

The laws and policies on the workplace distinguish working hours and after working hours, but no matter the situation employees should not misuse company property. The employers should inform the employees of any form of electronic monitoring, and should limit surveillance as much as possible.
