Officer Derek Chauvin was filmed kneeling on George Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes while Floyd was lying face down and handcuffed, which led to his death during his arrest in May 2020. This set off massive looting and protests from activists and protestors against excessive force by the police and racism. The sensational murder trial began, which was among the most followed trials in decades. The jury found Derek guilty of three charges: Second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
According to NBC News, over 1000 people every year are killed by police officers. However, only half of the killings are justifiable, with only less than 1% of officers ever getting convicted or charged (Ross,2019) Chauvin's indictment will not clearly change the criminal justice policies as it was only just for one case. Chauvin's trial is just an epitome and prevails far from the norm of what happens when a police officer uses excessive unjustifiable force and does not get convicted. Police brutality mainly remains unpenalized since state-sanctioned brutality is many times legal and remains unprosecuted. Good police officers are mainly witness-bearers of police brutality, but they remain silent with regards to misconduct from their colleagues since many good officers who report a misconduct are mostly transferred, demoted, or internally disciplined. Chauvin had previously had 18 misconducts against him (Andone et al., 2020). Floyd's death set off the conversation about race. Additionally, the central injustices regarding the unreasonable police killings of black Americans were in the spotlight after Chauvin's conviction. The justice system is an aristocratic system represented by an old image of blindfolded lady justice balancing a scale in her hand: the blindfold represents impartiality. In Chauvin's verdict, this is portrayed as there have been gains in efforts made to advance racial justice.
