Statesville Prison
The main method used by Sergeant Baldwin to maintain order and safety in the Statesville prison is locking down the inmates. All the prisoners have limited movements whereby they have to stay in their respective cells throughout. This method is always to be used in making the inmates cool down. However, some correctional goals in prison termed this method as ineffective because the inmates get bored due to idleness. The lockdown exercise separates prisoners from the community, making them more dangerous (Ferak, 2018). This method is also unethical because it takes down all the inmates including the ones who didn't cause any problems. The other method used involved firing gunshots in the air especially when one of the inmates attempted to attack a prison guard. Firing shots is effective in showing that the guards are alert and also reducing the rate of violent actions among the inmates. However, the inmates may get severe injuries in the event and sue the prison due to the action. The method is termed as unethical because it includes induction of violence as the guards try to harden the offenders.
Terry Dibble, one of the inmates in Statesville prison was transferred to the prison after having a severe fight with another inmate. The prisoner is supposed to serve prison for fifty-five years because of murder. At that time, Terry had been an inmate for only ten years with forty-five years still remaining for his sentence. The prisoner faces several issues in the prison including the lock but the terrible situation is separation from his girlfriend (Strether, 2018). The condition is worse due to the big distance between Statesville and home where his mother and girlfriend lived compared to the previous prison which was just an hour's drive distance.
