Over the past few years, there have been several school shootings--in Florida, Georgia, California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Alabama, North Carolina, Missouri, Oregon, Texas etc. --in which multiple students were killed by a lone-wolf shooter, many of these shootings occurred at or following school sponsored sporting events.
A group of concerned and vocal parents in Miami are demanding that that patrols be substantially increased around public schools.
Concomitantly, parents of public school students are complaining of "class bias" should you take police officers and/or patrol away from their schools.

The results of the Kansas City Preventative Patrol Experiment showed that increasing police patrols in neighborhoods did not have a significant effect on the level of crime. Despite this, it influences how the general public perceives the police and security (Kelling, 1974). Even though the number of police patrols is higher, the study revealed that the rates of different types of crime were still on the increase. When the police were regularly patrolling, the public was also not more willing to report about cases of crimes in comparison to a situation where they have normal or no police patrols. Based on the results, police departments can successfully choose to determine the effectiveness of different deployment strategies, and they can allocate resources to other issues rather than spending them for patrols in the streets (Kelling, 1974). This means that it is critical to prevent crimes rather than making the people feel safe with a higher police presence.
The study was a year-long experiment hat focused on routine police patrols, which are regarded as a significant aspect of policing. Based on the traditional beliefs relating to patrols, the results reveal that there are no statistical differences that arise in crimes such as robberies, auto theft, and commercial burglaries. The number of such crimes remained on the same trend in locations that did not have any police presence during the experiment. A routine patrol in marked cars occurs during a noncommitted time (Kelling, 1974). This is a time when the officer does not have any obligations or duties, and the time is wasted on other activities like eating food, watching people, pleasure riding, making personal phone calls and other activities. In this regard, it is better to consider initiating approach that deals with specific service goals and crime prevention rather than using the resources on preventive patrols.
