The Juvenile Justice and Correctional Process contain some stages that are used to aid the child with age limits between 7 and 18 years for the benefit of the youth and the society. There are regulation on judgment methods, circumstances, and involvement that differ within states. The aim of this paper is to analyze the juvenile process and correction in California using the case study of Colleen a 15 year old arrested for involuntary manslaughter with an analysis of the most appropriate rehabilitation plan for a nonviolent offense.
Arrest
In the case study, Colleen, a 15 year old resident of California was arrested for involuntary manslaughter of her neighbor and according to the seriousness of the offense; she was not released but was taken to the Eastlake Juvenile Hall for booking (National Advisory Committee on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals, 1976). At the probation, a decision was made between filing a petition or remanding Colleen to an adult facility or sending her to an adult court. The facts that aided the intake officer and the district attorney include that Coleen's mother is in a drug rehabilitation facility and that Colleen and her mother were abandoned by her father at infancy. The other facts that came up in the case are that Colleen stays with her aunt in a farm, that she has run away several times, and that each time she came back on her own. The other facts are that the neighbor and Colleen had differed several times before the incident concerning Colleens' dog biting the neighbor and the neighbor threatening to take the dog to animal control. They will also consider the fact that the neighbor was infuriated by Colleen's dog infringing on her property and verbally threatens Colleen and to how her fury decides to set a crow on fire. According to Colleen, she picks up a bucket filled with liquid in an attempt to put off the fire throws the bucket at the neighbor. However, as it was to be discovered later, the contents of the bucket were pesticide that caused an allergic reaction and before long, caused death to the neighbor. The decision made based on these facts was to file a petition.
