Introduction
In the society there are various standards that are supposed to be observed by every other member. This is an aspect that calls for the individuals to act according to set norms. Over and above norms, there are rules that guide every aspect of society, business, government and even the military among other areas. Laws in the society ensure that there is social justice, protection of personal freedoms, interests, rights and the environment with a twist of fairness (Morgan, 2015). As such there are enumerable roles of the law in the society all of which rest on the protection of the various interests in the society to ensure justice and fairness. The law ensures that there is way of solving disputes in manner that maintains order. Where the laws are broken, there are repercussions for the culprits to ensure a sense justice to the offended (Tanvir, 2014).
The law
The law can be defined as a set of rules that are part of an organized society, which are enforced for the sole purpose of maintaining order and social justice (Morgan, 2015). The central premises of the law is to establish a way to protect the rights, liberties, interests, establish standards, maintaining order and resolve disputes.
The role and function of the law in business and society
Businessmen, government and citizens are all part of the society and constantly interact through business transactions. Ideally, each of the parties has their own interests in light of the said transactions. Due to the complexity of the interactions and the interests involved, for there to be some of order in the society, business activities have to be regulated. As such, the law sets the precedents for the government, the businessmen and the customers. Aspects such competition, taxation, pricing, advertising, health and safety, employment, business registration, ownership, quality controls, environmental protection and licensing among others are some of the myriad sections that have to be controlled to ensure fair business transactions (Tanvir, 2014).
The law makes sure that the government is protected from unscrupulous businesses, while the businessmen are protected from the government exploitation, unscrupulous competition, rogue suppliers and suppliers (Morgan, 2015). The customers are also protected from unscrupulous businesses, hazardous products, poor pricing and exploitative marketing among others. In one of the landmark cases that ever took place in the United States, Cipollone v. Liggett Group, Cipollone, a smoker, was awarded damages after cigarettes led to her death (Law.cornell.edu, 2015). At the time, cigarette companies did not print warning messages on their products thereby misleading customers (Law.cornell.edu, 2015).
To ensure that every one within the business web of interactions is protected from other parties and vice versa, there are criminal laws, civil laws, procedural and substantive laws, private and public laws and the environmental laws.
