Even though America's two-party system tends to draw the voting population toward either the Democratic or Republican Party, a significant population of Americans identifies as politically Independent when polled. For instance, a recent Gallup survey shows that as of July 6th, 2021, 26% and 37% of Americans referred to themselves as Democrats and Republicans, respectively, while a staggering 43% identified as Independents (Gallup, 2019). Those who identify as Independents typically have lower levels of political involvement and are demographically dissimilar from those who affiliate with either the Democrat Party or the Republican Party.
While most are frustrated by partisan bickering and the uncivil behavior of many politicians, a deeper analysis of this population shows that they are not all that different from partisans.
