PharmaCARE (We CARE about YOUR health®) is one of the world’s most successful pharmaceutical companies, enjoying a reputation as a caring, ethical and well-run company that produces high-quality products that save millions of lives and enhance the quality of life for millions of others. The company offers free and discounted drugs to low-income consumers, has a foundation that sponsors healthcare educational programs and scholarships, and its CEO serves on the PhRMA board. PharmaCARE recently launched a new initiative, We CARE about YOUR world®, pledging its commitment to the environment through recycling, packaging changes and other green initiatives, despite the fact that the company’s lobbying efforts and PAC have successfully defeated environmental laws and regulations, including extension of the Superfund tax, which was created by Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).
Based in New Jersey, PharmaCARE maintains a large manufacturing facility in the African nation of Colberia, where the company has found several “healers” eager to freely share information about indigenous cures and an abundance of Colberians willing to work for $1.00 a day, harvesting plants by walking five (5) miles into and out of the jungle carrying baskets that, when full, weigh up to fifty (50) pounds. Due to the low standard of living in Colberia, much of the population lives in primitive huts with no electricity or running water. PharmaCARE’s executives, however, live in a luxury compound, complete with a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a golf course. PharmaCARE’s extensive activities in Colberia have destroyed habitat and endangered native species.
In preparation for this assignment, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research companies that have recently experienced negative consequences as a result of the company’s corporate activities.
Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:
1. Describe the key characteristics of a stakeholder and determine all the stakeholders within the PharmaCARE scenario.
2. Analyze the human rights issues presented by PharmaCARE’s treatment of the Colberia’s indigenous population versus that of its executives. Recommend at least three (3) changes PharmaCARE can make to be more ethical going forward.
3. Assess PharmaCARE’s environmental initiative against the backdrop of its anti-environmental lobbying efforts and Colberian activities. Support the position.
4. Decide whether or not PharmaCARE’s actions with respect to the indigenous people of Colberia would be ethical in accordance with each of the following ethical theories:
(a) Utilitarianism
(b) Deontology
(c) Virtue ethics
(d) Ethics of care
(e) Your own moral / ethical compass
5. Compare PharmaCARE’s actions with those of at least one (1) real-world company, whose corporate activities led to ethical, environmental, or workplace safety issues and financial loss. Analyze the similarities and differences between PharmaCARE and the company that you chose.

Stakeholders
Stakeholders denote the people who have effect to or are affected by a certain effort. Stakeholders may also involve people who have strong interest to something even if they, their friends as well as their families may not be directly affected by the effort in question. This is more so in academics and in philosophical matters. There are various levels of stakeholders such as the primary and the secondary stakeholders. The primary stakeholders are those that are directly affected by the effort in question. The secondary stakeholders are those that have interest to the effort in question and yet they are not directly affected by it. The secondary stakeholders are only indirectly affected by the effort in question. Key stakeholders may not belong to either of the two categories yet they have crucial impact in the effort in question. Mendleson (2010) observe that; this follows their position in their organizations or institutions that are involved in the effort in question.
The stakeholders within the PharmaCARE scenario include the PharmaCARE employees who work in the manufacturing facility in Colberia. These can be said to be the primary stakeholders together with the people of Colberia who are involved in the activities of PharmaCare. The surrounding population is also part of the stakeholders. The top management of the PharmaCARE is also stakeholders. Those can be said to be the key stakeholders in the sense that their positions held at the institution has much impact to the efforts of Pharmacare in the region. Although they may not be directly or indirectly affected by the efforts of PharmaCARE at the Colberia, their decisions have great impact.
The human rights breached
The scenario of Pharmacare denotes breach of human rights of the Colberia people. Generally, it can be said that there is breach of the right of dignity of the people of Colberia. They are not given the right treatment that denotes dignity that befits human beings. The PharmaCARE is said to obtain the information concerning indigenous cures from the traditional healers. This is in breach of their rights, because, they should be offered a compensation in the place of their information. There should be a compensation offered for their knowledge. Pfitzer, Bockstette & Stamp (2013) note that; there is need to ensure that human rights are not breached but are rather advanced by the efforts of corporations.
Again, the people of Colberia are subjected to overworking with very little pay. It is unbelievable that the PharmaCARE engages in paying the workers in Colberia a meager 1 $ (one US dollar) per day. This is very little pay in comparison of the work that they do and the rising cost of living following the global economic slowdowns. The people of Colberia are subjected to hard work especially the walking. Those people walk 5 miles a day in and out of the jungle to look for the indigenous curative plants. This is a long distance which could be cut by providing a kind of transport especially in the modern times where there are various technological advancements which can offer various alternatives.
