The Title VII Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a law that shields all employees from harassment and prejudice in situations such as employment, firing, compensation, promotion, job advertisements, and testing. It imposes this law to employers including, the government, government agencies, the private sector and labor unions that have fifteen employees or more (Society for Human Resource Management, 2016). The protection averts bias based on race, color, national origin, faith, and sex. Further, its protection extends to situations of pregnancy, sex labeling and sexual harassment.
Protecting employees from discrimination based on nationality refers to eliminating instances where a person’s birthplace, culture, language and ethnicity are used to deny them an equal opportunity. Moreover, it criminalizes the requirement of employees to speak in a particular language such as English or French (The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2009, Nov 21). Employees from diverse religions receive protection from discrimination by requiring all employers to handle them within rationale by treating them fairly and allowing them to celebrate and attend religious holidays and gatherings. Moreover, it requires employers to consent to employees wearing attires considered of religious significance, for example, Muslim women wearing hijab.
The Act protects individuals from sexual discrimination by criminalizing the acts of employers requesting sexual favors in exchange for work or other benefits such as increased pay or promotion from employees. Further, it bans sexual harassment when the favors are from employees of a different race, color, religion, age or nationality. Moreover, women enjoy protection from firing due to pregnancy or giving birth by the law directing the treatment of such circumstances similarly as other medical conditions (Dreiband, Swearingen & Day, 2015, 4-5).
