4.Summarize the roles and responses that the U.S. government, court systems, and law enforcement agencies in combatting computer crime. Next, suggest one (1) additional way—i.e., one not discussed in the textbook—that the law enforcement agencies can better counteract computer crime.

The internet has revolutionized the world, changing the way people do things. Owing to the internet revolution, users plugged in everyday making them susceptible to criminal tactics employed on the platform. The internet provides criminals with a new platform for committing crimes. The technology has several advantages but also comes with some disadvantages. Cybercrime is the most common form of internet crime and is used to describe criminal activities related to the internet. Some of the most common forms of online criminal activities include illegal access, illegal interception, data interference, misuse and electronic fraud. While law enforcement agencies try to tackle the problem of cybercrime, the usual methods of fighting cyber crimes cannot keep up with the pace as criminals keeps on improving their skills, making it a herculean task for the government and other concerned stakeholders (Ghosh and Turrini, 2010). Four Major Categories of Computer Crimes
Crimes against Individuals
Computer crimes are divided into four categories including crimes against individuals, against Property, crimes against Organization and crimes against society. Individual persons can be attacked in different ways like e-mail spoofing, spamming, cyber defamation, phishing, and cyber stalking. Stalking is one of the common forms of cybercrimes that pertains to making harassing phone calls, vandalizing victim’s property, leaving written messages or objects among others (Shinder, 2002).
Crime against Property
Cybercrimes may affect individuals’ property. Such crimes are also known as crimes affecting the economy. They include credit card skimming, intellectual property crimes, Internet Time Theft, Identity theft among others (Shinder, 2002). Crime against Organization
Cybercrimes also affect organizations such as banks, service sectors, government agencies, companies and other association of persons. Society has a whole, also gets affected by cyber crimes. Pornographic websites, sale of illegal articles, and illegal auctions on the internet are some of the crimes against society. Terrorist activities are also taking place using computer or computer networks in the name of cyber-terrorism. Cyberspace aid criminals in manufacturing fake currency notes and revenue stamps that affect the society at large. Cybercrime is a serious issue affecting the society in different ways (Shinder, 2002).
