Often, social workers spend a lot of time tending to other people's needs. As a result, they are inclined to neglect their emotional and mental health. Usually, when a person's daily job revolves around other people's problems, they become physically and emotionally affected. In the academic world, this phenomenon is known as vicarious traumatization or sometimes secondary traumatization. By definition, compassion fatigue refers to fatigue, apathy, or emotional distress resulting from others' constant care. Not even the experienced professionals in social work are immune to this syndrome. Similarly, corrections professionals experience a cumulative negative change in the course of their work. Corrections fatigue is a general term that describes the effects of occupational stressors that are unavoidable in a corrections work setting.
Signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and corrections fatigue
Compassion fatigue manifests itself in various forms. Often, it takes a toll on the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing of victims. Common symptoms of this condition include chronic physical and emotional tiredness, irritability, feelings of self-contempt, weight loss, difficulty in sleeping, and sometimes poor job satisfaction (Nolte et al., 2017). On many occasions, victims may be lethargic at work, feel apathy, and deliberately miss work.
Likewise, corrections fatigue similarly weakens its victims to compassion fatigue. Its symptoms often range from mild stress anxiety to depression and can sometimes morph into a post-traumatic stress disorder. Stressors in corrections include exposure to a dangerous environment, including poor working conditions, bad policy decisions, poor relationships with co-workers, and can sometimes stem from difficult inmates (Mikolon, 2017).
