Research as a Process
In this research, I was involved in research on the cases of police brutality against unarmed black men. The topic was selected because this has become a common issue in America, and it has sometimes led to demonstrations by the black community. Besides getting insight on the issue, I learnt a lot on research as a process, starting from structuring to the key databases to access information and acknowledging ideas borrowed from previous researchers.
One of the key things I learnt about research as a process is structuring and why it is important. I learnt that when presenting a study and findings, structuring is important as it shows the various parts of the study. The first part in most sections is the abstract, which is somewhat a brief summary and overview of the contents of the entire study. It shows the focus and aim of the study, the population involved in the study, the research methodology, and the general findings of the study. Further, the introduction is important because it sets the mood for the study and justifies its importance by situating the study in its right context. I also learnt of the importance of the other sections in showing how the research was conducted. Such sections could also enable a future researcher to conduct a similar study in the future by following the structure.
I also learnt the importance of using keywords in the research process to access the relevant information. I noticed that researchers also include a list of keywords in their study, as part of the abstract, to show the key terms that they used when conducting their research.
