Obesity constitutes a pathological disorder characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat hence impacting negatively on health and life expectancy. It is often a chronic condition involving a multifaceted interplay between genetic and environmental factors. Obesity is displayed by excessive cholesterol, elevated fatty acid levels; metabolic energy imbalance; insensitivity to insulin; gallstones, lethargy; elated blood pressure; extra accumulation of adipose tissues; as well as social and emotional inconsistencies.
Effect of obesity on the community
Obesity is a disorder that comes with a price with regard to an individual’s social and psychological well-being. Several studies on obesity have revealed that it can result in psychological problems including; depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, dissatisfaction with ones’ body, and general reduction in the quality of life. Most psychological studies have reported that such elevated weight gain is associated with poor levels of concentration and hence poor academic success, as well as social exclusion both at school and in the community.
With this, most obese children and teenagers within the neighbourhood experience prejudice and discrimination at different levels. This is often experienced by the significantly low number of friends that obese friends have. This greatly affect such obese friends to levels where they tend to underperform at school. Besides, since obesity tend to be associated with heart diseases and poor circulatory health, this deprives obese friends the ability to perform many forms of exercise, including engaging in physical education classes and sports at school which further worsens their situation.
