The original words from the book have been uplifted, and a little editing or order of wording changed. The type of plagiarism here is called extra-corporal plagiarism where an external source is not well quoted or paraphrased (University of Melbourne, 2016). If the student lacked ideas, it would be better to have the words in quotation marks.
Sentences plagiarized from the original work are; “not trying to publish negative results” and “casting the results in the best light or, as scientists say, buffing them”. In a correctly paraphrased form they would appear as; “publishing constructive outcomes” and “showing the results in some clear light or form” respectively (Crossen, 1994, p. 167). It should show recognition to the work already done by somebody else.
Plagiarism would be easy to recognize if, in written material, there are no indications of the source of new information. The information most students give should be from a source (Indiana University, 2014). Without acknowledging the source, readers will demand to find out where it is from. Besides, with the widespread use of the internet, most people can use specialized software applications to detect if a particular work is plagiarized or not (Watkins, 2008). Most of these software applications, like Turnitin, will show the source of that work, if available on the internet.
To avoid plagiarism, it is better to paraphrase a sentence or a collection of them. It is not best to use the same words throughout. That will be the utilization of the writer’s words and an acknowledgment of the source. One ill have claimed credit for the phrase as used in another publication (American Psychological Association, 2010).
