Information System’s 5 Components
Introduction
An information system can be conceptualized as the integration of software and hardware, including telecommunication networks that individuals design to gather, generate, and share important data, typically within an organization. It entails the flow of knowledge in the business system. The purpose of information systems is to offer proper information to the ultimate user, collect data, interpret the data, and communicate information to the system's user. The value of an information system is derived from its capacity to facilitate decision-making towards achieving an entity’s objectives. This paper defines each of the five information system components, offers perspectives on why the people aspect is the most important component and provides an example from my personal experience to support such reasoning.
Definitions of the Information System Components
Hardware is an information system component that is tangible – the physical aspects of the technology. Some examples of information system hardware include computers, iPods, flash drives, disk drives, and keyboards (Tantua & Godwin-Biragbara, 2020). The software can be conceptualized as a combination of instructions that commands the hardware on what to accomplish. Software is intangible, meaning that you cannot touch it. When programmers design software programs, they type out instruction lists that command the hardware on what to accomplish. There are several software categories, with the two primary classes being application software and operating system software. Application software includes Angry Birds and Microsoft Excel. Operating software includes Google Android on a smartphone and Microsoft Windows on a personal computer (Tantua & Godwin-Biragbara, 2020).
Data is a collection of facts. Noteworthy, data pieces are not useful by themselves. Data becomes a powerful resource for business when indexed, aggregated, and organized into a database. Organizations gather data and use it to make strategic decisions (Tantua & Godwin-Biragbara, 2020). People is an information system component associated with the human resources needed to run and manage it. Human resources constitute the ultimate users of information systems. People drive the integration of the technology components into an organization (Tantua & Godwin-Biragbara, 2020). People include front-line help-desk staff, programmers, systems analysts, and the chief information officer. The process is the last information system component. A process is conceptualized as a sequence of procedures to realize the desired result or goal. Information systems are increasingly integrated into organizational processes, generating better control of the processes and thus enhancing productivity. Businesses use technology to control and enhance processes to achieve their objectives (Tantua & Godwin-Biragbara, 2020). Moreover, companies seeking to gain a competitive advantage over their rivals increasingly emphasize this aspect of the information system.
