Yinka Shonibare uses history in interesting and provocative ways. In his work, he combines African and British fashion and thus comments on issues like slavery and colonialism. In this module, we viewed A Scramble for Africa (2003).

Many artists traveled the world to discover the cultural beauty evident in the art that is being practiced in other countries. This action opens the eyes of the artists to more diverse patterns and choices that may be represented in various artistic ways by analyzing the art in different countries. Other perspectives also influence the artists to create a masterpiece that tells a story about the complex histories of countries other than their own. One of them is Yinka Shonibare, a member of the British Empire, who created a link between Europe and African History (Hynes, 2001). This paper analyzes Shonibare’s works in a 2009 film entitled, Yinka Shonibare CBE (RA) in “Transformation.”
As an African who ventures into the land of the European Colonialists, Shonibare discovered racism which he elaborately portrayed through the use of diverse artistic media. He explored the association between the African contemporary identity and the legacy of European colonialism (Hynes, 2001).
Shonibare manipulated popular icons and applied his sophistication by cross-dressing the cultures in these two races. In his Victorian Philanthropist’s Parlour, he painted men with dark skin colors to represent the Africans while making the background a combination of fabrics that originated from the Europeans CITATION Yin09 \l 13321 (Art21.org, 2009). In most of his works, he also uses cloths made from Africa or those that resemble African art to provide a connection between the two continents.
