Solar/Wind Energy Source
As the demand for electricity has risen greatly over the past few decades, with supply for the most part depending upon fossil fuels in addition to nuclear energy and some hydropower, concerns have been escalating with regard to emissions of carbon dioxide contributing to potential global warming. Attention has now turned to the immense energy sources in nature, particularly in wind and the sun.  Solar and wind energy can be effectively harnessed and supplied to the nation’s electricity grid. Focusing on Topic 1, this paper discusses how solar/wind as a source of energy structures human societies, including cultural norms, environmental impacts, and infrastructures. More broadly, the paper explains the way in which energy sources shape both the human societies and individual lives.  
Solar/wind energy structures human societies and individual lives in various ways. Pertinent infrastructures have been put in place to tap into these sources of renewable energy. They have shaped human societies in that they have resulted in solar/wind installations to supply electrical needs to a regions and/or countries.  Solar photovoltaic technology has been developed to become highly efficient and wind turbines have also been developed significantly over the past few decades to effectively harness this renewable energy source. In particular, solar thermal technologies, with some heat storage, currently have great potential in climates that are sunny.  
With government encouragement and support to use solar/wind technologies, their costs have dropped and these days they are in the same range per kilowatt-hour as the increased costs of fossil fuel technologies, particularly with possible carbon emission charges on power production from them.  On the whole, infrastructures such as wind turbines, solar photovoltaic panels, wind/solar farms, and electrical grids have been developed since this form of energy is renewable. This means that the energy is infinite, as the supplies are always being replenished by means of natural processes. Theoretically, the everyday supply of solar energy is adequate to meet all energy needs on planet earth for a whole year. In addition, it has led to the development of greener cities to help address the environmental crisis and reduce the impact that cities have on this planet. 
Besides, solar/wind energy source has shaped individual lives  and cultural norms by making people become more conscious about the environmental impacts of energy sources, and this awareness causes them to strive to reduce their carbon footprint. Decreasing one’s carbon footprint denotes that a person reduces the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is released into the atmosphere because of his/her everyday activities.  Decreasing the use of fossil fuels that emit large amounts of CO2, using renewable energy sources, and supporting the development of renewable sources of energy like wind/solar are some of the ways in which individuals are trying to reduce their carbon footprint.
