Ever since the end of the (American) Civil War in 1865, the re-united USA has steadily rose to influence the world in cultural, political, and military spheres to become a global super-power. Rapid industrialization coupled with mass immigration into the country augmented this surge to its status in the early 20th century. Several factors contributed to the birth of such development. However, the three major aspects that led to this attribute include; economic growth, US foreign policy, and military power (George, 2002). These factors played a great part in the development of the country, thus it is worth examining each from a broad point of view. For instance, economic growth of the United States contributed greatly in its rise to a superpower. The expanding power was fuelled by the immense wealth of mineral resources such as oil, gas in the country that invoked an economic boom, due to its favoring geography. This allowed a 75% income growth among the Americans towards the year 1900 and another 13 % in the following two decades. This wealth, however, was accumulated in the Northern parts of the country as the South had suffered from secessionist trend and conflict with the North.
This boom created an impression of exemplary life in the United States that stirred massive immigrations by Europeans into the country with about 27.5 million persons arriving in the country between 1865 and 1918. This provided a recipe for a large market base for local products thus promoting industrialization and labor base for the agricultural, railway and textile industries. The increasing need for new products in the broad market culminated in revolutionary innovations with discoveries of the telegraph and steel that created immense opportunities (Meernik, 2004).
