The Battle of Midway was a combat that was fought in World War II between the United States and the Japanese navy forces at Midway. It took place in the first week of June 1942 and ended up with the US emerging as the victors. The Japanese planned to attack Midway as a way of avenging America’s bombing of their two home islands in the Tokyo Air Raid two months earlier. They had also purposed to infiltrate US defense on the Eastern Pacific at Midway, destroy the remaining US fleet in the Pacific Ocean and capture Hawaii. However, all these plans ended up in a complete shift in what many scholars have termed to be tactical, operational, and strategic failures on the Japanese side. This paper looks into the factors that led to US victory in the 1942 Battle of Midway. This paper will discuss some of the reasons for the victory of the United States in the battle Midway.
The foremost reason for US victory was a success in the US intelligence to detect and identify the planned Japanese attack on Midway. On the other hand, there was a failure on the part of the Japanese intelligence for they underestimated the power of US intelligence in detecting their plan. During the Second World War, US intelligence was able to monitor the strategic plans that other countries made regarding the war. Among their intended targets were the Japanese Imperial Fleet communication system (JN-25) through which the US navy got the news of the intended invasion. With the help of Jasper Holmes, a young officer at Hypo station, the US Navy managed to identify that the Japanese planned to attack Midway and as a result, put in the necessary defensive measures for countering the attack.[Aviles, A. J. (2015). The Decisiveness of the Battle of Midway. Pg. 230]
Another factor was an operational failure on the Japanese side concerning the state of their battleships. Japan lacked the knowledge that defense forces require in the usage of battleships. This failure was because instead of remaining close to the naval carriers as their escorts, the ships operated at a longer distance that could not afford reinforcements to the carriers. The absence of radar on Japanese ships also made it impossible for them to detect the awaiting American ships early. Also, the Japanese made a greater emphasis on the quality of their vessels while giving little heed to their numbers. This decision was a dangerous one because when the Americans began to launch their attacks, the quantity of the ships could not offer help for they were destroyed in large numbers, leaving the army defenseless.[Aviles, A. J. (2015). The Decisiveness of the Battle of Midway. Pg. 39] [Kleiss, N. J., Orr, T., & Orr, L. (2017). Never Call Me a Hero: A Legendary American Dive-bomber Pilot Remembers the Battle of Midway. Pg. 450]
The struggles of Japan to create a perfect naval and the dominance of the air on the western pacific failed in the battle of the Coral Sea in 1942 when the fleet of the United States turned back a Japanese attack force headed for t...
