Special operation forces are a military operation that needs unique methods of employment, tactical techniques, training, and equipment. Joint Operations (2017) states that military operations are usually held in hostile and politically sensitive areas and are characterized by these elements: low-visibility, a high degree of risk, time-sensitive, and requires regional expertise. Special Operations Forces are active forces commanded by the Secretary of Defense which are trained, organized, and equipped to undergo and support special operations. In a generation of modern warfare where all dimensions of force, time, space are likely to be exploited to gain ascendancy over the adversary, the role of the Special Forces becomes vital. It is, therefore, necessary for any nation to have these forces fully geared up to confidently take up the challenges of the modern battlefield. The United States has the most organized establishment of Special Forces in the world with an overall strength of 45,000 personnel. The goal of this paper is to discuss and analyze the functions of different special forces such as the Army US 75th Ranger Regiment, 160Th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, DELTA Force, 95th Civil Affairs Brigade, U.S. Navy PSYOPs, and the Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Teams.
The 75th Ranger Regiment is the United States Army's premier airborne light infantry unit. They specialize in raids and airfield seizures and are one of the very few units that have been constantly deployed since 9/11, with each Ranger battalion having rotated into a combat zone in the neighborhood. The force of the Ranger is lethal, agile and flexible capable of enforcing a myriad of a complex joint special operation to support the United States' policies and objectives. This army is trained with specialized skills that give them the ability to perform numerous special operations missions such as airborne, air assault, direct action operations, raids, infiltration, exfiltration, recovery of special equipment, and support of conventional forces. Therefore, each battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment can be deployed anywhere in the world ("Army Rangers: The 75th Ranger Regiment", 2019).
The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment known as the night stalkers is the aviation unit designated for special operations. The mission of this unit is to organize, train, equip and employ Army special operations aviation forces worldwide in support of contingency missions and combatant commanders. They are called as night stalkers due to their proficiency in nighttime operations. The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment is highly trained and prepared to accomplish the toughest mission in all environments, day or night. Each battalion of this has a strategic composition of light, medium and heavy helicopters ("160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment", 2019).
