McNamara was a man who liked efficiency and as such was quick to reach conclusions faster than the Pentagon was used to hence developing many critics whenever he surpassed committees. He was in office and ahead of things when the Japan’s cities were being bombed whereupon he was held responsible for the outcomes. Should the war have been lost, he admits that he would have been a guest of the prison with charges of war crimes. With special reference to the Japan bombings, McNamara asserts that, proportionality should be a major consideration during war (youtube.com, 2017). The offence should have never happened in the first place. Should the government have acted the way it did during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam issue could not have arisen at all. To the Americans, it was a battle of cold war but to the Vietnamese, it was a civil war. The lesson here therefore is that America should understand that, whatever they see and believe as part of its culture, could turn out to be very contrary to the ultimate truth. During his tenure, McNamara taught the Americans that it was worth reasoning before acting blindly. The consultation of the right stakeholders was very important since, they ought to be convinced before any meaningful alliance could succeed. The responsibility of the Vietnam War rested with the then president and not McNamara as he claims. He however states how sorry he was regarding the errors he committed during his tenure in the state government as the Secretary of Defence (youtube.com, 2017). In his clear articulation, man’s nature could and would never be changed at all. The end to this war is not nearing an inch close to the end because of the nature of man. Man is very complex and that is the reference upon which the fog of war lingers. To the historians and political scientist, the fog of war is a film to reckon with since it clearly exhibits the impact of personality bound by culture on the US foreign policy (youtube.com, 2017).
