American Democracy
Democracy is a political system where individuals choose and replace administrations through free and fair elections. Citizens in a democratic system have a key role in participating in public activities, enjoying their rights, and upholding the rule of law (Diamond, 2019). Democracy in the United States exists because its citizens believe in democratic processes. The paper probes characteristics of American democracy and how it differs from the theory of democratic government.
Characteristics of American Democracy
Individual’s Worth
Democracy is based on the belief in the significance of the individual. Each individual is treated uniquely despite their status in life. This theory of the dignity and worth of an individual is significant in democratic thought (Shea & Abbott, 2018). However, individuals in a democratic system can be forced to do things against their will, such as obeying traffic lights and paying taxes. Therefore, American democracy promotes individual worth.
Equality Among Citizens
American democracy dictates that every person is equal before the law. Nobody should be held back due to arbitrary factors such as race, gender, color, and religion (Shea & Abbott, 2018). It states that folks are free to develop as they wish with absolute protection of the law. Consequently, American democracy ensures equality.
Compromise Necessity
In a democratic system, public decision-making involves a give-and-take case among several competing interests. It is a case of compromise to find the most acceptable status to the largest group (Shea & Abbott, 2018). Compromise is mixing and correcting competing views and interests. It is a critical part of the democratic concept since it helps achieve significant agreement.
Individual Freedom
