Since independence, Uganda developed in its economy and technology. Citizens, both local and international, worked to innovate and invent different activities that could solve the state from poverty. Several economic activities, like agriculture and trade, contributed positively to Uganda’s current financial status. Unemployment contributed a certain percentage to poverty. It is a fact that Uganda is still in the rank of developing countries but not to the extreme state. Here is a brief analysis of the country, from its demographics to other economic aspects.
Current Demographic and Economic Features
Uganda’s economy relies on agriculture. Agriculture acts as an employer in the country. Over eighty percent of Uganda’s population engages in agricultural activities. The agricultural sector contributes almost sixty percent of the country’s G.D.P. Twinomugisha (2019) established that foreign exchange much depends on agricultural productions. The country’s manufacturing relies on locally produced raw materials from farms. Uganda’s current population marks a total of 45,819, 107 people. Demographics in Uganda indicate that the country covers 241, 038 square kilometers within its boundaries. Population density overall estimates to 183 individuals per square kilometer. Large numbers of Uganda citizens live in rural areas, unlike other countries where the majority prefer developed urban areas.
Primary natural resources in Uganda include; salt, fertile soil, climate, gold, copper, and oil. Uganda experiences tropical rain and exquisite climatic conditions, making it simple for coffee farming to garner huge harvests. Coffee is the leading country’s export. Linked to this are the country’s trading partners include; China, United Arab Emirates, India, Kenya, and Saudi Arabia. It joined Africa’s trading blocs like COMESA and East African Communities. Livelihood strategies in Uganda include the cultivation of bananas, maize, and beans. With their international trade, they maintain a sustainable lifestyle.
Economic Policies
In his publication, Twinomugisha (2019) mentioned that Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) indicates a figure of sixty-five billion dollars. The GDP shows the cumulative value of all services and goods manufactured within a state in a given year. GDP is a crucial gauge of a country’s economic power. Further, the unemployment rate in Uganda increases yearly, with several students completing their studies and getting to the job market.
